The Biology Piece We Have Missed In Trauma & Depression

(Part 1 of Lessons Learned of The Trauma-Chronic Illness Connection)

“Especially as physicians, trauma awareness was completely lacking. Yet, when you go out and practice and if your eyes are open, you realize that virtually every chronic condition you ever deal with has got a traumatic template to it.”
~ Dr. Gabor Mate

Show Notes:

Welcome to this episode of the Biology of Trauma podcast! I’m your host, Dr. Aimie.

To say that I was excited about this interview with Dr. Gabor Mate would be an understatement. Gabor has spent his career exploring the connections between trauma, childhood development, and stress. And it was his work that inspired me to pursue addiction medicine when I realized general surgery was not where I belonged.

Trauma is something that we all experience at various points in our lives. It’s inevitable.

And when trauma isn’t healed, it can manifest itself as a chronic illness. But going to your medical practitioner isn’t necessarily going to take care of the issue, especially when trauma is at the core of it all.

In this episode, Gabor and I share our lessons learned as medical physicians working in addiction medicine and trauma.  We will answer the question: “In our focus on the emotional and social aspects of trauma, what biology piece have we missed?”

Here’s what you will learn:

  • Why chronic health conditions can be a sign of trauma & dysregulation
  • How most chronic illnesses are less genetics and more trauma-driven
  • The role copper plays in trauma and depression
  • How trauma makes your body more susceptible to toxins
  • The benefits of starting with regulation for chronic illness
